About Old World Typewriter

Digital fonts are perfect. Real typewriters are not.

Every key on a typewriter leaves a slightly different impression. Letters shift, ink varies, characters wear over decades of use, and no two pages are ever exactly alike. These imperfections are what give typewritten documents their unique character.

Most digital typewriter fonts repeat the same letter over and over again. Real typewriters never do.

Old World Typewriter recreates the look of genuine typewritten pages using thousands of scans from real machines. Instead of repeating identical characters, the software selects from many unique impressions of each letter, producing documents that look naturally typed rather than digitally generated.

The project was created by Danish photographer and software developer Ulrik Hansen, combining a lifelong fascination with vintage technology, photography and software development.
